4 String - 01/10/2011

Here are the beginnings of this 4 string project.

Decided to use an Ebony fret board.

Fret board is slotted.  Time for markers.

Got the markers and frets installed.

Using an Ebony veneer for the head stock.

Time for the wings to be glued to the neck.  The wings are Ash.

After I glued the other wing on I routed the body shape and sanded.

I'm ready to route out the pup cavities and prep for clear coat.  I'll post more pics soon.

Blackie - 01/10/2011

Again I didn't grab the camera when I started this one so here's what I have.

After fitting the kneck pocket and rough cutting the body I routed and sanded it.

Drawn the cavity and got it cut out in the pic below.

Now its time for paint.

I'll shoot more pics once I get the neck bolted on and get it ready for clear coat.

Koa top 5 string - 01/10/2011

Got the neck carved.

Got the top book matched and body shape drawn out.

Here's a shot with the neck pocket cut.

Got the top glued and routed out.

Routed the body out.

I'll post more pics when I get further along.

Forgot to grab the camera while I was doing some more on this project so here are some updated pics.

Once I get some more shots of the guitar I'll get them posted as well.

carved top - 04/25/2010

Back to this carved top. I've roughed in the neck before gluing. Going to put a thin piece of wenge between quilt and mahogany.

carved top - 04/25/2010

The light really washes the quilt out but this top is going to be awesome.

carved top - 04/25/2010

Here is a look at the quilt top being glued up.

Got the top glued and clamped.

Here's a shot of the back after being ruff cut.

And a shot of the top after being ruff cut.  Hopefully I can start carving this thing out soon.

P90 - 04/24/2010

All for now on this project. Next we are ready to flip it over and carve the top.

P90 - 04/24/2010

Another angle.

P90 - 04/24/2010

Obviously a few hours  later the back has been roughly carved along with the control cavity.

P90 - 04/24/2010

Next I rough cut the body shape on the band saw.

P90 - 04/24/2010

Finally the top cap is glued to the body.

P90 - 04/24/2010

I routed out the tone chambers which also helps the weight issue.

P90 - 04/24/2010

A shot from the other direction.

New beginnings

Josh's Bass - 03/14/2010

This is a shot of the volute after ruffing in the neck. The materials used is Eastern Hard Maple and Padouk.

Here is a shot of the back side of the body.  The body material is Alder.

I wet the body with some thinner to show how beautiful this piece of old growth Walnut will be upon finish. The fretboard is Birds Eye Maple with Walnut fret markers.  I have other pics from earlier stages but I cant find them in the computer. As soon as I do I'll post them as well.

Heres a shot of the cavity routed out for the electronics.

I got a coat of sealer on Joshs bass today.

This is a shot of the front side after sealer. Gonna try to get a coat of lacquer on it in the next few days after sanding.

And now we sit and watch lacquer dry, while we are working on other projects of course.

Here's the back side.

Finally got Josh's bass sprayed, sanded, and buffed.  Not a bad piece of Walnut huh?

A shot of the backside as well.

I have some more pics of the bass with the electronics and hardware being installed as well.  I'll get those posted shortly.

Jeremys archtop - 03/14/2010

These are the materials that were selected for this project.

This is a piece of Wenge veneer that will be under a piece of Quilt for the face of the head stock. The quilt will be from the same piece as the body.

This is a shot after the truss rod was routed.

Here we have a shot of the fret board being glued up. This is a piece of Brazilian Rosewood that was milled in the 60's. I'll post more pics as the project continues.

Joe's Archtop - 02/10/2010

Here is a template for the body shape.

I ruffed in the neck radius.  I'll mic it to spec later.

Slotted the fretboard.

Here you can see the extended tenon and a body template drawn out.

I got to this stage and remembered I hadn't taken any pics in a while. The top has been arched by hand with shapers and planers.

I did some reliefs on the back.  I later decided to go further with the cut-away for more access to the uper register.

Routed the cavity for the switches and knobs.

Got a coat of stain and sealer on it today.  I'll post more pics as I get further along.

Here it is after 6 coats of lacquer.  I'll let it set for two weeks before sanding and buffing.

A shot of the back side. (the date is so I'll remember when I sprayed it!!)

I got the logo in place and sprayed the head stock.  The black line under the face of the head stock is an ebony veneer sandwiched between two pieces of mahogany.  The fret board is a piece of African Blackwood. I'll post more pics after sanding and buffing!!

After hours of sanding and buffing, this is the finished product.

Here's the back side.

Look mom!  No heel!  This piece of mahogany turned out prettier than I anticipated.

Believe it or not this top was saved for a gold top project that I have coming up.  After further review, I changed my mind!!  I'll post more pics after I cut the nut and mount hardware.

I put the Sperzel tuning keys on today. Sorry about the small pic. Shrunk it one too many times!!:(

....and of course the back side.

I got all the switches and pots installed as well.

Here's a shot after I installed the frets.  I'm anxious to hear the African Blackwood fretboard. I'll post more pics as I get further along.

Ron's Bass - 01/20/2010

Heres a pic of Ron's neck being glued up.  (his is on the right)

I glued and radiused the birds-eye fret board.

Today we did the shamrock inlays and fret wire.

Heres a shot of the neck after I shaped it.  (Notice the draw knife in the upper left)

Neck, meet body.  Body, meet neck.  (Alder body)

After the eastern maple top was glued on I cut out the body shape and then edged it to its final cut.  I also did an arm and belly releif.

Here's a shot of the backside.

I got the pick ups routed out and the bridge mocked up.

Drilled the holes for the tuners and slotted the nut.

Heres a shot of the control cavity routed out.  Nice flamey neck!!

This week was pretty productive.  Got a coat of color and two coats of sealer.  I'll post some more pics after final sanding and buffing.

Here's a shot with some laquer and hardware mounted.

Here it is in all it's glory, waiting to be strung.

A gratuitous backside shot!!!!

Here is a shot of the head stock after completion.

.......and we're done!!!

Single Cut Flat Top - 01/19/2010

Here is a shot of the guitar without the hardware.  You can see the tenon inside the pick up cavity.  This goes on past the bridge.

Single Cut Flat Top - 01/19/2010

I did an extended tenon on this guitar which let me sculpt the neck into back of the guitar.  In doing this, I got rid of the heel completely.

Single Cut Flat Top - 01/19/2010

This was a single cut flat top with Seymour Duncan 59'ers. 1 volume 2 tones 3 way toggle with series/parallel/coil tap toggles for each pick up.  Mahogany back with eastern maple top and hard maple neck with rosewood fret board. (fret board was milled in the 60's by the way!) Bridge is Hip-Shot.
